Position Paper Tips

Hello everyone!

As the position paper deadline approaches, here are some tips to help you with the process...

Past and Current International Action
In this section, you should focus on any regulations undertaken by the international community.  You can also feel free to include any national programs that utilize the technology for development. 

Country's Position
Since these are emerging fields, not all of your countries have integrated the technology in research or solutions.  Dig into how international programs have used biotechnology products in your country (ex. have GMOs been used to combat malnutrition?).  Additionally, consider how your country could benefit from the deployment of biotechnology or facets of the information economy.  These fields have large implications to help development or solve some of the most pressing global issues.  Look into the issues that your country struggles with and they could be addressed with biotech or information tech.  Consider further what future consequences it may have.  What potential threats come with this technology?  How can you anticipate them, and regulate beforehand?  These are the questions you want to consider so you can see the future implications of our topics.

Block Chain and the Information Economy

One of the most hyped developments of 2017 was the sharp rise of crypto-currencies; but the more interesting development actually lay in how people are embracing the underlying technology: Blockchain. On a basic level a Blockchain is a place to store information in such a way that the information cannot be tampered with. This is why it has made crypto-currencies possible: the Blockchain ensures that no one can cheat and pretend that a transaction never occurred; the "money" after all is just a bunch of binary code - so making sure someone can't just keep a copy of those ones and zeros and use it again later is critically important. Blockchain solves this problem through public key cryptography, and maintaining public ledgers where people store the information. Thus when a transaction is complete, there is a publicly available record of the change that anyone can go back and consult to see who really owns those ones and zeros - and anyone who wants to pretend it never happ

Introduction to Moral Philosophy

Hi all, While our committee isn’t about philosophy, the topics we explore and their implications are highly philosophical. Specifically, they deal with moral philosophy. You don’t need to be an expert in moral philosophy for this committee, by any means, but an understanding of larger moral philosophical ideas can help you in debate. If you are struggling to articulate a moral position your country has on controversial ideas, you can shape your argument and support it with a specific moral philosophy. Adding structure can be particularly useful if you are having trouble supporting your country’s position because you personally disagree with it. Additionally, an understanding of moral philosophy can help you in debate; each moral philosophy has weaknesses which can be exploited in debate if you see that a country’s position tends to follow a moral philosophical framework.
